How
it works
The
compressor in an air conditioning and heating system helps provide
movement and pressure to the freon that allows the freon
to change state, change of pressure, and change of
temperature. The compressor is the mechanical heart of
an air conditioning system. It causes refrigerant to
flow. Evaporation of high pressure high temperature
liquid refrigerant into low pressure low temperature
vapor is what causes the cooling effect in mechanical
refrigeration. A refrigerant can be reused over and over
again if it condensed from a vapor back to a liquid. To
be condensed, the, the vapor must be pressurized. The
compressor, then, serves a dual purpose. It not only
circulates the refrigerant, but also pressurizes the
refrigerant vapor before the vapor is condensed for
re-use.
Generally speaking, most compressors perform efficiently
over long periods of time. Few problems develop if they
are properly cared for and given regular maintenance.

Most
people hear that their compressor is bad and needs to be
changed but is it really bad?
Most compressors fail due
to system malfunctions which must be corrected to
prevent repeat failures. After a compressor fails, field
examination of the failed compressor often will reveal
symptoms of the system problems. Corrections will help
eliminate future failures.
